Top Signs your Industrial Electric Motor Needs Repair

With proper maintenance, industrial electric motors are known for their ability to last years in even the most harsh conditions. However, like any industrial equipment, electric motors are bound to have some issues as time goes on. Luckily, in many cases your motors can still be repaired and provide you years of useful life, as long as you catch the issues in time. Here are some of the things you should look out for that might be a sign that repair is needed.

Overheating or burning smell

This is probably the most obvious sign that your motor needs a trip to the repair shop. However, you’d be surprised how many operators just power through during a busy job even when there are signs of overheating. If your motor is hotter than normal, or is starting to smell like something is burning, stop using it immediately and contact your repair technician. This could be a sign of issues with the cooling or electrical systems, and if it is not caught quickly it can lead to irreparable motor damage, and serious safety hazards.

Altered power output or efficiency

Any changes in power output, torque or overall motor efficiency are signs that something might be wrong. For example, worn bearings or damaged rotors can cause a motor to draw more power than normal. And worn out parts can increase friction and lead to reduced torque or power output. In any of these scenarios, a thorough inspection by a qualified technician is your best next step.

Excessive vibrations

More vibration than usual can be a sign of damaged or misaligned belts, rotors or bearings within your motor. If your motor starts to vibrate excessively, stop using it as soon as possible and contact a technician.
